Kratos attempts to stop Ares but is swept aside and scarred across his right eye by the violent Olympian. Ares prepares to kill the young Kratos for attacking him. Still haunted by visions of his mortal past, Kratos decides — against the advice of the Goddess Athena — to explore his past and travels to the Temple of Poseidon, located within the city of Atlantis.
After a series of confrontations, Kratos kills Scylla. Kratos eventually locates his ailing mother, Callisto, who attempts to reveal to him the identity of his father.
The gameplay of God of War: Ghost of Sparta resembles that of the previous installments. It is a third-person single player video game viewed from a fixed camera perspective. The player controls the character Kratos in hack and slash combo-based combat, platforming, and puzzle game elements, and battles foes who primarily stem from Greek mythology, including minotaurs, cyclopes, harpies, Gorgons, and satyrs.
The undead legionnaires, keres wraiths, geryons, automatons, Boreas beasts, and Triton warriors were influenced by the mythology, but created specifically for the game. Some puzzles are simple, such as moving a box so that the player can use it to access a pathway unreachable with normal jumping, but others are more complex, such as finding several items across different areas of the game to unlock one door. There comes a certain point in every franchise's life where it needs a game that translates to an estranged handheld console. That is what God of War: Ghost of Sparta is - a game of its esteemed series that goes relatively unnoticed by the masses - but somehow still relevant to the fan base.
Games that follow this almost curated process always seem to never be good, but never terrible either. Ghost of Sparta brings Kratos' violent and rage-driven journey into your pocket with the franchises' next offering. The satisfying hack-and-slash mechanics, engaging storylines, and intense visuals will be tested. It does stoke curiosity to see how it stands up. Much like the first two games, God of War: Ghost of Sparta finds Kratos on a hell-bend mission of vengeance once again within the backdrop of Greek mythology.
The game finds much of its allure from the story, so I won't give too much away. We want to hear from you. God of War: Chains of Olympus is the second God of War PSP game that shows a personal part of Kratos' life combined with battles and also explains the story of how he became to be a complete god from the transition of God of War to God of War 2.
Kratos is a warrior who serves the Greek gods of Olympus Facing death, Kratos called on the God of War, Ares, whom he promised to serve if the god would spare his men and provide the power to destroy their enemies. Loaded with gore and a compelling story, follow Kratos on his journey through being the Ghost of Sparta as he ruthlessly makes his way passed hoardes of enemies and solves puzzles alongside the iconic Blades of Chaos.
The game offers insight into what happened between the transition of God of War 1 and 2. However you perceive it - the fact is undeniable that God of War: Ghost of Sparta is excellent overall. The surprise from Ghost of Sparta is how well they have translated the full God of War experience into a handheld console. Other major franchises like Monster Hunter have delivered decent games on the platform - yet never really offered something stunning comparatively to their parent offerings. Kratos and his resonating skill and personality come across brilliantly - if not better.
Here we have the rare PSP game that is thoroughly enjoyable from back to front. The whole experience simply works on many levels, even if nothing has changed from the core mechanics and setting. If you never thought about getting the console before - God of War: Ghost of Sparta certainly gives a reason to invest.
